Day 9 May 26 2022 tour Mt. Saint Helens

Today we drove to Johnston Ridge Volcano Observatory.  The observatory is still closed, but the parking lot and the views are still perfect.  It was 108 miles from our campsite.

Lots of lovely views of Mt. Saint Helens. It was sprinkling a bit, but not enough to make us think twice.

The new erosion thru the ash that was deposited 40 years ago was amazing.

Yes, it was cold! 38 degrees...

We got to see a family of mountain goats, as well as the huge volcano. It was interesting to see the rivers and canyons that have formed thru the debris field.  The trees look too perfect, all parallel.

We went to Coldwater Lake and hiked a bit. It is still spitting rain, but not really raining, and it is 63 degrees.

From there, we went back to the Visitors Center and hiked the trail around the marsh. It was part forest, part rain forest, part bog. Lovely flowers.

Then we filled up with fuel, and went back up toward our campsite, passed it and continued with the hope of seeing Lava Canyon and Ape Cave. We got stopped at a road closure at Marble Mountain Snow Park and had to make a U-turn. We did get more views of Mt. Saint Helens from another angle.

It was still sprinkling when we got back to our campsite. Paul decided to dump the tanks and fill the water tonight in case the rain was heavy in the morning. Well! Ever since the mishap with the macerator cap, it has been leaking when he dumps. Today the leak grew to a spray. He thought maybe the host needed to be changed. And his very smart wife happened to purchase a spare just for this purpose. My formerly unhandy husband has become quite the fix it guy. He was able to swap out the hose... in the rain. He has become a real handyman, l am so proud of him. Tonight's challenge: how to dehumidify the rig in the rain. Probably nothing we can do about that tonight.
