Day 22 June 8 Redwoods to Eureka

And we are off to Redwoods National Park. We are back in California. We don't have a secure place to stay. The website for the Elks Club in Eureka says they can accommodate 24 vehicles on a first-come, first-served basis. Hopefully we get one. Tomorrow night we are hoping for a KOA; we left a message on their phone. And the next 2 nights near San Francisco we paid online for a Thousand Trails place, but we aren't members, so I hope we can stay there. It was expensive ($91/night) and no hookups. We also paid for Golden Gate Bridge crossing and it's valid for a month, so whenever we get there, but it should be within the next couple days. And we bought parking for John Muir Woods. The last time we went there we couldn't even go in, because we couldn't park. We passed our agricultural inspection and then we're in California.

When I got a signal, I was able to confirm our reservations for tomorrow night and try to work on the ones for the 10th and 11th, but lost signal again.

Our first stop in Redwoods was the Hiouchi Visitor Center. We got our sticker and stamp.

These murals were outside the visitor center.

We just confirmed our reservations for the 10th and the 11th so we can go to San Francisco and got a veterans discount of $40 very happy about that, but it is without hookups. So tonight is our only mystery for the next three days.

We took a walk out to Battery Point lighthouse in Crescent City for some scenic views.

Stopped by some overlooks

We went to the Trees of Mystery which is a tourist trap. $20/person. We looked in the gift shop. It seemed to be just a walk in the woods we don't need to pay for.

They have a trail to walk and a gondola ride. We looked in the gift shop. If you wern't going to hike a bit it would be alright, but we passed on it. We are in search of lunch.

We had a great little lunch at a diner; really good tasting and bad for you food. I had a carb overload. I had biscuits and gravy, hash browns, and bacon. Then on we go.

We took the Newton Drury scenic road and ended up going on a trail called Karl Knapp trail which is 2.2 km. Lovely manicured trail 4 ft wide through a wonderful growth of trees. Very little mud, which was wonderful after all the muddy trails we have been on recently. Lovely temperature, and sunshine between the trees. We ended up at Prairie Creek Visitor Center.

There is a troll on the bridge.

We have noticed a lot of road work within the park with flagman and one lane of traffic in multiple places.

This gold bear was at one end of one of the bridges we crossed.

And we saw elk

Our last stop in the park is Kuchel Visitor Center. Nothing much there but we found a national map listing where all the parks are. Had to get it.

In Eureka, now.

Now for the last challenge of the night finding the Elks Lodge and seeing if they have space for us. It looks pretty full but there's some empties. Really great full hook-up for $30.

Then a shopping trip and some cool murals. Paul was great to allow me to get the pictures.

And back to our spot and nobody took it while we were gone. Yahoo!
